How to Heal Ears?

HOW Earaches

Usually, it comes on early, but during the time it lasts, it is very painful and annoying: earache. Do not confuse it with more serious illnesses such as otitis, mumps (in slang we call the disease “orecchions”) and otalgia. Ear pain has very common origins, ranging from a cold to poorly dried ears when you are out of the water from a pool, to a real infection or a dental issue that makes chewing painful. The symptoms are limited to pain coming from inside the ear that, without intervention, tends to increase until sleep becomes difficult, even impossible.

  1. Sit up. A few minutes in an upright position reduces swelling and starts to drain fluid from the Eustachian tubes. Even swallowing can help lessen the pain. If you can, keep your head slightly elevated while you sleep to ensure better drainage.
  2. Turn on the hairdryer. The grandparent trick of blowing smoke into your painful ear had a rational basis. It’s not the smoke that reduced the pain, but the heat from the smoke. To achieve the same result without straining your lungs, turn on the hairdryer at a moderate temperature. Then, holding the nozzle 50-60 centimeters from the ear, direct the warm air onto the painful ear.
  3. A piece of salt. Once again from the grandparents, the oldest remedy remains the most effective: an ear with boiling salt. Very simple procedure: heat double salt, the kind you use in the kitchen, and put it in a cloth, or even a clean sock. Then apply the very hot cloth with the salt directly on the ear and keep it applied for a few minutes.
  4. Move your ear. This is a test to determine if you have external otitis (like swimmer’s ear) or middle ear infection. Take the outer part of your ear between your fingers. If you can move your ear without pain, the problem is likely in the middle ear. If moving the outer part hurts, then the infection is in the external canal.
  5. Heated oil. Place a bottle of baby oil or petroleum oil in a bit of water at body temperature. Leave the bottle in the water until the oil is warmed. Then, using a dropper, take a drop or two of oil and put it in the painful ear – the pain will decrease. Caution: Do not put liquid in your ear if you think your eardrum is broken or perforated.
  6. Garlic and onion. To enhance the soothing action of olive oil, strengthen it with garlic and onion. The former you obtain in liquid form after thoroughly cleaning the head, for the onions simply chop them before adding them to the oil you are using for the earache. An alternative, though not as effective, to olive oil is lavender oil, which also works due to the intensity of its scent.
  7. A chewing gum or a yawn. Everyone knows that this is a good system to relieve your ears on an airplane, but have you ever thought about it at midnight? The muscle action of chewing is what underlies the relief, as it opens the Eustachian tubes. Yawning moves the muscle that opens the Eustachian tubes even better than chewing gum or sucking on a candy.
  8. Pinch your nose. If you are flying at 10,000 feet above sea level when your ears start to hurt, here’s what you can do, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Pinch your nose with your fingers. Take a deep breath and then, using the muscles in your cheeks and neck, push the air into your nose as if you wanted to send your fingers out. When the internal pressure in your ears has reduced the external pressure, you will feel a “pop”.
  9. Decongest yourself. Before you get into trouble, use an over-the-counter decongestant. For example, if you need to fly and know that your sinuses may cause problems and block your ears, take a decongestant or nasal drops an hour before landing. At home, use a decongestant in the evening before going to bed with a stuffy head: you will avoid midnight pain.
  10. Beware of diving. Just like people flying, divers must also be able to equalize the internal ear pressure with the external water pressure, otherwise they may have ear problems. Underwater activities in shallow waters are the most dangerous because “maximum changes in air volume occur in relatively shallow waters (less than ten meters). Avoid tight pads and very tight hoods that prevent pressure adjustment during descent. Swimming on the surface puts less pressure on the eardrums than swimming underwater; it is recommended not to dive more than one meter deep to avoid pressure on the eardrums.

  2. Boiling cloth. Instead of water, you can use a boiling cloth, with a double pinch of salt inside. Again, the benefit should be immediate.
  3. Olive oil. A small bottle of oil should be placed in boiling water to warm the liquid. Then pour the oil into a cup or shot glass, using a dropper, take 3-4 drops and put them in the baby’s ear. Then insert a cotton ball, without pushing too deeply, to dry.
  4. Onion. Chop it very finely, place it in a linen bag or a cotton handkerchief. Place the compress on the ear where the pain is coming from and secure it with a clip. The best time is before the baby falls asleep.
  5. Garlic. It is a natural antibiotic, widely used by the ancient Romans, which you can put in olive oil. It fights microbes, then inflammation.
  6. Lavender essential oil. Combine 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil with a few drops of olive oil and pour them onto a cotton ball that is then gently placed at the entrance of the ear, without pushing it down. Do not keep the cotton in for a long time: at most for an hour.
  7. Ginger. It is a natural and very effective pain reliever. In the ear, 3 drops of ginger juice should be introduced, then dried with a cotton ball.
  8. Licorice. Heat a small dose of licorice root extract in two tablespoons of butter to form a kind of paste. Apply to the outside of the ear, after cooling, and leave until there are improvements.
  9. Ear movement. Gently move the baby’s ear and jaw. This allows you to unlock the Eustachian tube and any trapped fluids in the canal can flow out and relieve the blockage.
  10. Otitis. If the pain and fever persist, it is very likely that the child has otitis. At this point, you need the intervention of a doctor who will likely prescribe antibiotics for the child.
