What to eat to get pregnant

So, what should you eat during pregnancy? Don’t worry, we have what you need! I am neither a doctor, nor a specialist, nor vegan, nor vegetarian, nor diabetic. If you have specific dietary needs, talk to your doctor and see if you should consult a specialist such as a nutritionist. Like you, I wanted to make sure I was eating healthily and protecting my growing babies. Even if you are stylishly taking prenatal vitamins, you may worry about not eating enough to maintain a healthy pregnancy, especially if you have a low appetite. As the “rules” of nutrition are constantly changing, you will find conflicting information online. And, if you have a multiple pregnancy, information is almost non-existent. Trying to figure this out can be frankly overwhelming.

Although I am not an expert, I have done research with doctors and gathered information from current and reliable sources. And, as a health advocate and mother of twins, I feel it is my responsibility to share with you my findings on what you should eat during pregnancy, and I am happy to do so.

Proteins contribute to the growth of babies as well as their needs during pregnancy. A woman pregnant with twins needs 50 grams more protein per day than a woman pregnant with a single baby. What does this mean? These additional 50 grams would be equivalent to 220 grams (8 ounces) of meat or eight large eggs or about two and a half cups of cooked lentils. Keep in mind that this adds to the usual amount needed for a single baby pregnancy. A woman weighing 60 kg (132 pounds) would need about 66 grams per day if she is carrying a single baby or 116 grams per day for a twin pregnancy.

Carbohydrate needs are also higher during a twin pregnancy. You should strive to consume at least 208 grams of carbohydrates per day to help your baby develop, gain weight, and avoid ketones (a chemical that occurs when you do not consume enough carbohydrates). This is equivalent to six and a half slices of whole grain bread or four cups of rice or five cups of cooked pasta or seven and a half chapatis.

It is important to consume enough calcium to promote growth, as well as to preserve bones and teeth for you and your baby. It is also important to help control blood pressure during pregnancy. All pregnant women should consume three to four servings of calcium per day to meet their needs. Mix and match calcium-rich foods you enjoy to ensure you get enough. Each of the following foods is considered one serving of calcium:

Do I need to eat more than if I am expecting just one baby? No, you do not need to eat more. The advice for healthy eating is the same whether you are expecting twins or more than one baby (NCCWCH 2011, NICE 2011). Listen to your body. Eat when you are hungry and stop eating when you are full.

Try to have a healthy and balanced diet, with plenty of fresh ingredients instead of precooked and processed foods. This will help you gain weight gradually and help your babies grow well because they receive the right nutrients (McAslan Fraser 2012).

You need iodine in your diet to promote your baby’s development (Bath and Rayman 2015, Rayman and Bath 2015). Dairy products and safe sea fish, such as cod or haddock, are good sources of iodine (NHS 2015b).

If you are wondering how to achieve a healthy dietary balance, take a look at our meal planners quarter by quarter. Will my babies get enough nutrients if I sometimes struggle to eat? This will not jeopardize your babies’ well-being, as long as you do not suffer from severe vomiting (NCCWCH 2008, NICE 2013) or become overly dehydrated.

How to conceive twins

Many parents would agree that giving birth to a child is definitely a blessing. Becoming a father or mother changes a person’s life in ways one cannot imagine. One will never feel as much love as parents do for their children. But giving birth to more than one child is certainly the feeling of hitting the jackpot. After all, it doesn’t happen to everyone! Not only do you have twice the love, but you also live a life that can be twice as beautiful.

Of course, having twins has its pros and cons. You give birth to two boys who, hopefully, will be best friends for the rest of their lives. But, at the same time, you are forced to deal with two dirty diapers, two constantly crying children, and two children who refuse to fall asleep at the same time in the middle of the night.

However, this has not stopped many couples from trying to conceive twins naturally. It is estimated that 3% of pregnant women have multiple pregnancies in the United States, and this number is increasing every year. Whether it’s eating the right foods, taking folic acid, or practicing sexual positions that may favor you, here are 15 different (but very natural) methods that can help you conceive twins.
